The current University building is the work of French architect Lucien Ambroise Henault. Construction begins in 1863 on the grounds occupied by the houses of the former San Diego de Alcala Franciscan College, demolished for this purpose.
The place occupied by the Central House of the University belonged before 1664 to Mrs. Maria Viera, widow of Captain Lorenzo Nuñez, who, in the same year, donates the land to the Franciscans. This Order built in them the San Diego College of Alcala, which operated from 1678 to 1812.
The work began in 1863 and was completed in 1872. National Monument. Decree, Ministry of Public Education No. 11, of 01.01.1974.
