Place where the city of San Bartolomé de La Serena was re-founded on August 26, 1549. It is the main public walk of the city and its center is adorned by a large stone sculpted fountain, the work of the artist Samuel Román.

The square witnessed the most important events in La Serena, as well as the usurpations that the city suffered by the pirates that struck the region.

The Carrera

Santiago-La Serena: Air and land routes. Leave La Serena on the road that leads through the Elqui Valley, to the east. The road passes through the towns of Vicuña (66 km from La Serena), and Rivadavia at kilometer 83. At this point, turn off onto a path to the right, until the end of the route, where Pisco Elqui is located, in the kilometer 103. The whole road is paved.

In front of the square, on Carrera street and Cordovez corner, is the neoclassical cathedral church. Notable are its stained glass windows, its main altar and its chapel made of marble. The architect in charge of erecting it was Juan Herbage.
