Judging by the archaeological remains found, the human presence in the area where the city of Perth currently sits dates back at least 40,000 years.
The Australian aboriginal population in the area declined after the arrival of the first settlers from the Kingdom of Great Britain, due to disease, direct persecution or the spread of alcoholism among them.
Explorations in the area by the British, French and Dutch began in the early 18th century, although the first documented sighting in Europe of the region was made by the Dutch captain Willem de Vlamingh and his crew on January 10, 1697.
In 1827, James Stirling arrived in the area and founded a small settlement that was later taken over by Charles Fremantle. In 1829 the colony that would give rise to this city was created, this being the date that is considered as the founding of the city.
Queen Victoria granted city status to Perth in 1856.
The greatest economic development began after the discovery of various gold deposits in Kalgoorlie and after the completion of the transcontinental railroad works in 1917.
Perth is a city in Western Australia, capital of the state of Western Australia. It has 1,507,900 inhabitants (2006 census), which makes it the fourth most populous city in Australia and the largest in the state, since it is home to almost three-quarters of its total population.
It is located on the estuary of the Swan River. Its name comes from the city of Perth, in Scotland. The metropolitan area lies between the Indian Ocean and a low coastal escarpment known as the Darling Range and encompasses more than 30 localities including Fremantle, Bayswater, Canning, Stirling, Gosnells, Nedlands, Peppermint Grove, Claremont, Victoria Park and Armadale.
The closest city to Perth with a population of more than a million people is Adelaide, which is 2,104 kilometers away, this makes Perth the most isolated city of more than one million people in the world.
It is an active port, destined especially for the export of gold, nickel, iron and aluminum exploited in Western Australia.
