The National Sanctuary of Ampay is geographically located on the southern flank of the mountain of the same name in the Vilcabamba mountain range of the Eastern Andes of southern Peru. Politically, it belongs to the District of Tamburco, Province of Abancay, capital of the Department of Apurímac. Due to its location, the Ampay forest formation that includes an important stand of ´´Intimpa´´, is of transcendental importance for the maintenance of the ecological environment of the urban area of ​​Abancay, since the forest functions as a protection barrier against possible disasters natural conditions that could endanger communities and populous sectors of the city. Furthermore, the forest influences the productive regulation of the main sources of water resources and the benign climate of the surroundings of the Mariño river sub-basin, in addition to serving as a habitat for the flora and fauna of the Sanctuary.



Created in 1987, it is located in the department of Apurimac. The most conspicuous elements of this National Park are the Ampay snow-capped mountain, whose summit reaches 5252 meters above sea level, the natural forests of the ´´humid low montane´´ type in which the conifer known as ´´Intimpa´´ predominates or ´´Arbol del sol´´, and two beautiful closed basin lagoons.



Legend says that a very rebellious young man who came with a group of Aymara mitmas decided to stay in the Pachachaca valley. He had several children and among them a beautiful daughter who used to get lost in the beautiful landscapes of Abanca. They were always looking for her among the peaks. To those called, it was heard: ´´Ampay! ´´ (here it is).
