The Pernambuco Museum of Sacred Art (MASPE) is a Brazilian museum located in a historic building in Olinda, in the state of Pernambuco.
The building that today houses the Museum of Sacred Art was built in the 17th century, in the Alto da Sé, the hill on which Duarte Coelho founded the city in 1535. Initially it served as the House of the Senate of Olinda. With the arrival of the first Bishop of Pernambuco, Monsignor Estevão Brioso de Figueiredo, in 1676, who also settled there, he also became the Episcopal Palace, a function that would become exclusive from 1690.
In the nineteenth century the mansion underwent new modifications, serving as a collective residence of religious, college and army barracks during World War II, but preserves two original turrets and the twelve wooden balcony windows on the upper floor. On its façade is still the old episcopal coat of arms and a UNESCO plaque declaring the city Monument of Humanity.
The museum has occupied the site since 1974, and in 1977 FUNDARPE underwent new renovations, re-installing the Portuguese tiles at the entrance of the Museum.
Its collection is composed of polychrome and gilded ancient images, paintings and folk art and objects of worship in churches. The MASPE's fixed collection came from pieces provided by the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife, and was later enriched. Today, it brings together religious pieces from the 16th century to the present, including important examples of contemporary folk art.
The museum's exhibition space is divided into seven thematic rooms:
Olinda Room, Cultural Monument, with photos, maps, paintings, documents and archaeological pieces referring to the city.
Saints' Procession Room, where saints of roca (images only partially carved and clothed) are shown and processional images.
Hall of Saints and Reliquaries, with 18th century images and some reliquaries and reliquary arms.
Santos' Gypsum Room, concentrating on 19th century French statues, some with iron structures and polychrome.
Room Aspects of Sacred Art in Pernambuco, which seeks to assemble a panel of the evolution of the imagination between the 17th and 19th centuries.
Room The Altar in the Church, recreating the interior of a small church, with altar, images, confessional, custody, paintings and objects of worship.
Room of the Sacred Way of the Craftsman and Nativity Scene. Here are exposed scenes of the passion, death and resurrection of Christ, as well as cribs of Pernambuco artisans from the interior and the capital, among which stand out Ana Pamplona, Galdino, Mestre Saúba and Wandecock.
The museum develops a busy schedule, with courses, lectures and exhibitions that accompany the liturgical cycle and the religious calendar. It is located at 726 Bispo Coutinho Street.
