On October 16, 1907, the then governor of the province of Buenos Aires Ignacio Darío Irigoyen founded the La Plata Zoological Garden, by means of Law 3.059, which in its first article said: «authorize the Executive Power to invest up to the sum of 5,000 pesos national currency in the formation of a Zoological Garden within the Paseo del Bosque of this city. It was in charge as director of the zoo, Dr. Alfredo Plot who had to diagram the routes and distributions of the environments.
In 1918 Dr. Plot was succeeded in the management of the zoo by Dr. Carlos Marelli, who remained in office until 1940. During Marelli's management the property was remodeled and arboreal and shrub plants from all over the world were incorporated. giving rise to the constitution also of the Botanical Garden.
The La Plata Zoological and Botanical Garden is located in the city of La Plata, capital of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It is located on Paseo del Bosque, more precisely on Calle 52 and 118.
The average number of visitors per year is around 250 thousand people. It has 122 species, distributed as follows: 42 mammals, 62 birds, 17 reptiles and 1 amphibian.
In 2008 he joined the Latin American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums.
