When in 1669 the prince regent D. Pedro authorizes the foundation of a convent of the Order of the Barefoot Augustinians in Estremoz, a long process begins and something difficult for the implantation of the order. It is known that the commonly assigned Augustines arrive in Estremoz in 1671 and that they have had some difficulties until they find the place to settle in dependencies of the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit.
In spite of the works of improvement carried out by the same Brotherhood, it was not until the beginning of the XVIII century that the building was the object of great and beneficial architectural works, during the end of the reign of D. Pedro II but especially during the reign of King Magnanimous , D. João V.
Outside, the sober façade of the church and the convent stands out, a Baroque architecture from the beginning of the Seventy. Still on the facade of the church, the two angels are to venerate the cross, as well as the schedule on the portal indicating the date of completion of the church, 1719.

Its interior encloses a phenomenal artistic complex, constituting one of the most important baroque buildings existing in the county of Estremoz deserving of a general recognition of this importance. Thus, it would be fair to highlight the whole building, however from the artistic point of view, the church undoubtedly has an obvious importance. Whether for the beauty of altar altars, tile panels attributed to António de Oliveira Bernardes (one of the most well-known painters of the Baroque period), the joanine organ in gilded and amosaic carving, the various sets of "single figure" tiles of the different rooms of the convent.
