Cerro Castillo Reserve occupies an area of ​​179,550 hectares

The main attraction of this National Reserve is precisely Cerro Castillo (2,320 meters above sea level), a name that alludes to its angular figure that resembles the towers of a castle. In the area there are areas of eternal ice, besides the El Castillo lagoon.



The predominant native tree of the Reserve is the lenga, which can be found forming pure forests between 600 and 1,200 meters above sea level. To protect the soil, about 1,000 hectares have been reforested with exotic species. Among the animals and birds that live in it are huemules, guanacos, foxes, cougars, condors, cachañas and eagles.



The Carretera Austral, which runs through the Reserve on the way to the city of Cochrane, allows you to cross the Cerro Castillo mountain range that separates the Aysén and Ibáñez river basins.



The administrative headquarters and the camping area are located in the "Laguna Chiguay" sector, at Km 65 of the road towards Pto. Ibañez and Cochrane. The campsite has 8 locations, restrooms and drinking water.



Administratively it is located in the communes of Puerto Ibañez and Coyhaique, in the provinces of General Carrerra and Coyhaique, XI Aisen Region; 64 kilometers southwest of the city of Coyhaique.

Coihaique is located 1,639 km south of Santiago de Chile and 618 km from Puerto Montt.



There are several alternatives to get to Coihaique:



By plane

There are daily departures from Santiago, some intermediate cities and Punta Arenas. Balmaceda Airport is 55 km away.



Bus

They reach the city via Route 5, Panamericana Sur. There are regular services from Santiago and the regional capitals.



By car

Via the Puerto Montt Southern Highway.



In addition to Cerro Castillo, the heights of Cerro Iglesia (1,750 masl) stand out and the Conde stone, which is a rock shaped by the elements as a human profile.



A few kilometers from the reserve lies the sector known as "Alero Las Manos", with Aboriginal traces dating from 6,000 to 5,000 years ago; certainly of Selkman origin.
