Built in 1876 and inaugurated on February 14, during the government of the first Mayor of Barranco; Mr. Enrique García Monterroso; Its construction was a primary need to unite the ends of the ravine and allow the passage of the banks of Ayacucho Street and the Hermitage. It endured the Pacific War and witnessed the destruction of Barranco, on January 14, 1881, the date on which Chilean troops set fire to the city destroying part of the temple of the Hermitage and the Bridge, for which it was reconstructed, being repaired several times.
The name of the bridge derives from the innumerable romances that this picturesque corner of Barranquilla had and are framed by; In 1921, the mayor Enrique de las Casas had it completely repaired because it was badly damaged, since then it has been called Puente de los Suspiros. The bridge resists the earthquake of 1940, but is cut, finally being 31m long.
Barranco District
There is a tradition that indicates that whoever sees the bridge for the first time and crosses it without breathing, their wish will be fulfilled. The bridge served as the inspiration for a famous song by the composer from Barranquilla Chabuca Granda, entitled “El Puente de los Suspiros” in 1960.
