In a dominant position on the town, it is part of the territory on the left bank of the river Guadiana, along with its neighbors Castelo de Moura, Mértola Castle and Noudar Castle.
Classified as a National Monument in 1954, it had consolidation works and now works in the Alcáçova, the Archaeological Museum of Serpa, which presents a permanent exhibition, covering a vast period, from the Paleolithic inferior to the Islamic period, with materials originating in its majority of the municipality of Serpa.
