It is a stratovolcano characterized by eruptions of water and muddy stones, as well as fumaroles. Some eruptions occurred in 1851, 1863, 1922, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1983, 1987 and 1991. When phreatic eruptions (mud avalanches) originate, they descend to the north through the sulfur ravine.



The height of the Rincón de la Vieja is 1905 mt. When he reaches the top, he comes across an extremely dangerous "donkey's back", as there is no safe place to stand up. On the left is the crater and on the right an abyss about 500 mt.







Location: It is located in the Guanacaste mountain range, at a latitude of 10 50 ’north and a longitude of 85’ 23 ’’ west.







Rincón de la Vieja is a volcano that is 1,916 meters above sea level, expanding over 400 square kilometers of land. Its formation is due to the simultaneous explosion of several volcanic cones, which grew and joined in a single mountain. Nine independent sites of volcanic activity have been identified at the top of the mountain. One is active, the others are slowly being eroded by the elements.



Hot springs and steam geysers are a common occurrence in this area. There are also lakes that contain sulfide dioxide, with constantly boiling layers of vapor. Thermal activity in the park increases in the rainy season due to the amount of water that is constantly heated and evaporated.

Studies carried out in the park have documented 257 species of birds. There are also small populations of mammals such as deer, pumas sloths and tapirs.



Rincón de la Vieja is located in the northeast sector of Liberia, in Guanacaste. This park can be accessed by taking a dirt road approximately 21 kilometers long, where we recommend going in a four-wheel drive car.
