he Queen Astrid Park is a park in the Belgian city of Ghent. It is located in the Macharius district and is accessible via Ferdinand Lousbergskaai (main entrance) in Ossenstraat. The park in English landscape style is rough and large in shape and green oasis in densely populated part of the city. Via the exit in the Ossenstraat you can directly reach the Rommelwaterpark.
The city park is in the form of a merger of two large city gardens, namely the top around Villa De Groote, originally a country house from 1793, and owned by Louis Piers de Raveschoot. The plates owes its name to the Belgian Queen Astrid who died in 1935. After her death, Queen Astrid parks for children arrived in various Belgian provincial capitals. The park in Ghent was opened to the public in 1949.
In the center of the park there is a pond and a dovecote. A few monumental trees, a playground, a bronze statue representing the former queen and winding footpaths further define the view. In 1990 the park and the surrounding area were protected as a cityscape. Since 2007, every Sunday afternoon in August, 'Astrid goes loos' has been organized, a small-scale neighborhood party that is increasingly successful (for the time being the last edition in 2010).
