The Science Center of the State University of Pará is a place that combines a wide variety of activities and demonstrations of all kinds, and seeks to familiarize visitors with the main concepts in the areas of science, encompassing physics, mathematics, chemistry, geology. , Astronomy, Origin of Life, Environment, Health and Biotechnology. UEPA Science Center is also a place for the development and implementation of teaching, research or extension projects for its teachers.
Visitors can observe demonstrations of various experiments in chemistry and physics, learn through mathematical games, watch lectures and videos, make observations under microscopes, discover basic principles of ecology and adaptation, and gain new knowledge through interaction with various elements that will be part of it. permanent and temporary exhibitions.
In addition, the Science Center also has structures such as the Planetarium, Infocenter, Library, Vegetation House, where various activities are developed in a dynamic and interactive programming.
The Pará Planetarium "Sebastião Sodré da Gama", the first in the northern region of Brazil, was founded on September 30, 1999, linked to the State University of Pará - UEPA with the mission of creating possibilities for improvements in teaching and learning. sciences, mainly astronomy. His name honors the Pará scientist Sebastião Sodré da Gama (1883 - 1951), director of the National Observatory of Rio de Janeiro from 1929 until his death. The Planetarium of Pará has the purpose of generating and disseminating education, culture and tourism, with great municipal and regional repercussions. This Study Center focuses on the important study of Astronomy and Environmental Education as a cross-cutting theme.
The Planetarium is considered the best existing tool for the study of astronomy, because the shape of the room - round and covered by a hemispherical dome - combined with the existing special projection technology allows us to visualize the stars and their movements with the correct notions of the size and distance ratios; These facts and phenomena cannot be demonstrated in books or on flat screens. In addition, we can accelerate celestial movements and can observe phenomena lasting days, months, years in just a few minutes. For example, to study the seasons of Planet Earth we need approximately one year, and we depend on the weather conditions for the observations. In a Planetarium, this study, for example, may take a few minutes, due to the possibility of acceleration of celestial movements.
The Pará Planetarium Projection Dome is 11m in diameter and has a capacity of 105 spectators. It has the Zeiss Skymaster ZKP-3 planetarium projector and features audiovisual, amplified sound board and multimedia projectors. This instrument projects about 7,000 stars, moon, planets, comets, asteroids, rainbows, eclipses, constellations, astronomical coordinates; simulates daytime, annual and polar movements, space travel, etc. It can also function as a time machine, presenting the sky as seen at any time in the past or future. The Planetarium is, therefore, a didactic resource par excellence, as it allows the clear understanding of the astronomical phenomena that occur in the universe.
Located in Belém, a reference city of the entire region with about 1,409,000 inhabitants, 92 public preschool schools, 278 public elementary schools, 93 public high schools, as well as renowned universities, the Pará Planetarium under UEPA coordination contributes to the promotion, adaptation and refinement of products, methodologies and activities for the teaching and scientific diffusion of Astronomy and Science, especially planetarium sessions, educational workshops and materials for use in initial and continuing education teacher education courses. Basic and mediators to work in non-formal activities of dissemination and popularization of Science and Technology.
In addition to the summit projections at school hours, there are also sessions open to the public on Thursdays at 5:30 pm.
