Institution created to keep the personal and intellectual collection of writer Gilberto Freyre gathered, preserved and available to the public.
Mission
Contribute to the political-social, scientific-technological and cultural development of Brazilian society, based on the Freyrian work and its influence on the understanding and interpretation of its reality, with a view to overcoming social inequalities.
Gilberto Freyre and his family decided to establish, at Vivenda Santo Antonio de Apipucos, a Foundation that would not only bring together their cultural heritage, assets and collections, but could also encourage the continuity of their studies and ideas, aimed at understanding them. and interpretation of the Brazilian social reality.
The Gilberto Freyre House, transformed into a foundation on March 11, 1987, fulfills its destiny. In his conception of time, where the present, the past and the future interpenetrate and constitute one time, his life and his work remain unchanged and today play the role of beacons of the actions developed by the institution.
MUSEUM HOUSE
The Santo Antonio de Apipucos Villa, today the Magdalena and Gilberto Freyre House Museum, is located in the place where the writer chose to live for over 40 years: the bucolic and traditional Apipucos neighborhood.
The building, recognized as the original 19th century grand house and renovated in 1881, houses the collection of objects collected, stored and ordered by the Freyre family.
The preservation of the environment, exactly as it was conceived by Gilberto, reveals the emotion and sensitivity towards the formation of a collection that emphatically testifies the life of Pernambuco, the country and different places of the world. Here, Catholic sacred images are confused with pieces of African origin, Portuguese tiles with pieces of Brazilian folk art, oriental porcelains with English and Portuguese silverware, as well as a vast bibliographic collection and a rich pinacoteca.
The environment of the Gilberto Freyre Foundation, consisting of the Magdalena and Gilberto Freyre House Museum, the Ecological Site and the Living Museum, is open for public visitation and has the infrastructure to receive tourist groups and students.
For schools, the Gilberto Freyre Foundation has a special visit script that includes pedagogical actions. Therefore, school visits must be scheduled in advance.
Hours: Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm (last entry at 4 pm).
