It is not known for certain the date of construction of the Hermitage of Santo António, being nevertheless probable that this one was constructed during century XVIII, since it is to that period that the references go back to its respect and the booty coming from the excavation archaeological study carried out there.
The first reference to the hermitages of Monchique dates from June 7, 1754, concerning the pastoral visit of Bishop Lourenço de Santa Maria, Bishop of the Algarve, which leads to suppose that its construction precedes this date. However, the absence of references to this building in the section of Parish Memories of 1758, concerning the damage caused by the earthquake of 1755, raises the doubt regarding the date of its construction.
It is assumed that it was between 1803 and 1853 that it lost its religious use and began to be used for profane purposes. Later sold in square, was inserted in a farm with the same name.
Stretch of St. Anthony
The last use of the building, until about 10 years ago, led to the construction of an upper floor for housing purposes, the ground floor functioning as an animal shelter.
At the moment the building is property of the Municipality of Monchique having been totally recovered and transformed into a cultural space destined to the presentation of temporary exhibitions and where also of small concerts develop.
