Diz-se que Barcelos possui a maior concentração de tucunarés de toda a Amazônia, e que ali foi pescado o maior deles, com 12,445 kg. A pesca esportiva é a maior atração local e destaca-se por uma característica especial muito valorizada por seus praticantes: é ecologicamente correta. Depois de pescado, o peixe é pesado e devidamente registrado. Em seguida, pescador e peixe são fotografados, o anzol é retirado e, finalmente, o peixe é devolvido ao rio.
