MS Cap San Diego is a general cargo ship, situated as a museum ship in Hamburg, Germany. Notable for its elegant silhouette, it was the last of a series of six ships known as the White Swans of the South Atlantic, marking the pinnacle of German-built general cargo ships before the arrival of the container ship and the loss of German heavy cargo ships. industry.
The Cap San Diego was built in 1961 and launched by Deutsche Werft for Hamburg Süd as the last of a series of six ships. The 159 m, 10,000 dwt vessel operated on a regular schedule between Germany and South America, completing 120 return flights until 1981. in 1986 when it was bought by the city of Hamburg.
The ship was mainly restored by the labor of enthusiastic and laid-off dock workers and has been kept operational to date. Typically, the Cap San Diego is moored in the Port of Hamburg, where visitors can access virtually all parts of the ship, from the bridge to the engine. Temporary exhibitions are held in one of the cargo areas. Passenger cabins can be booked for overnight stays. Several times a year the ship leaves the port for self-powered trips, usually on the river Elbe or to Cuxhaven. In 2001 the ship received the Maritime Heritage Award from the World Ship Trust and in 2003 it was declared a protected cultural heritage by German law.
The ship takes part in the Long Museum Night in Hamburg.
