Matera is located on the right bank of the Gravina River, whose gorge forms a geological boundary between the mountainous region of Basilicata and the Murgia plateau of Apulia.

The old part of Matera, known as the sassi, is a series of caves carved into the rock at the edge of a ravine.
To the north we have Sasso Barisano and to the south Sasso Caveoso. (Sassi is the plural of Sasso)
Despite how much is said about Matera today, it was only at the end of the 20th century that the Sassi were declared uninhabitable and the government relocation of all its inhabitants to new housing in Piano took place between 1952 and 1970.
A new law of 1986 started the restoration and reoccupation of the Sassi, this time for the benefit of the wealthy middle class.
Recognition of the Sassi, which was labeled la città sotterranea ("the underground city"), along with the rock churches as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in December 1993, helped attract tourism and accelerated the site's recovery.
In 2019, Matera was declared European Capital of Culture.

When visiting Matera, we recommend, as we did, hiring a local guide who will take you through the streets and caves, providing all the information about the place.
In the past, people's way of life was one of extreme poverty and precarious conditions, where it was the animal feces that heated the caves since they lived together with people and the feces, when fermenting, reached temperatures of almost 50º, but imagine the smell.

Matera became famous because of some films that became famous and that were shot there such as "The Gospel of Matthew" (1964), "The man from the stars" (1995), "Passion of the Christ" with Mel Gibson (2004), " Ben Hur" (2016) and "Wonder Woman"

To visit Matera you will need at least a full day, ideally 2 days because Matera is also worth visiting at night.
It is advisable to have a good physical preparation.

Alberobello is almost a must visit when visiting Puglia.
It's not that you need a lot of time to visit it or that you have many reasons for interest. Basically Alberobello is of interest to visit the famous Trullis, which are houses with conical roofs made of stone.
The Trullis of Alberobello are now a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Although the whole city and even the surroundings there are quite a few Trullis, the main ones are the following:

- Rione Monti, with about a thousand cones, is the largest and most famous trulli district, located on the south side of the city.

- The Rione Aia Piccola, a short distance from the first, is smaller but exclusively residential (prohibited to open commercial activities), with about 400 cones.

- Casa Pezzolla, a complex of 15 communicating cones used as a Museum of the Territory.

- Casa D'Amore, the first city hall, is linked to the official recognition of the city. The house-museum of the Trullo Sovrano. The only two-story Trulli in town.

We to visit Alberobello, we stayed 2 nights in a campervan park very well located less than 10 minutes walk from the Trullis.
To visit the main sites of Alberobello, you don't need more than 4 hours

Polignano a Mare

Polignano a Mare is certainly the most photographed town in Puglia, being one of the most popular destinations in southern Italy.
Excellent place to spend a few days of vacation and enjoy the beaches.
In addition to the boat trips to visit the caves, the most famous attraction is the Grotta Palazzese restaurant, considered one of the best in Italy and the world located in a cave over the sea.
Another of the activities that you cannot miss in Polignano a Mare is wandering through the alleys of the historic center, tasting the local specialties in one of the many restaurants that you will find in the historic center.
For all these reasons, you cannot miss visiting Polignano a Mare.
