Considered one of the oldest squares of the city, the Square and the Cais da Ribeira were already mentioned in royal letters of 1389. Of medieval origin, when there already existed a great economic activity, due to the presence of a river port, was a zone of intense commerce, with tents of sale and a lot of the fish. In 1491, there was a great fire in the area, which was followed by a reconstruction process, with houses with open columns over the river and slabbing the floor of the square.
Located in a central point for commercial development, Praça da Ribeira always deserved the attention of the authorities responsible for urban planning and management of the city, so it could not go unnoticed to João de Almada e Melo, who in the eighteenth century reformulated it.
Originally the project contemplated a rectangular square closed to the east, south and west and open to the north for the streets of São João and the Merchants. On the side of the river (south), the Fernandine Walls would open arches to allow easy access to the pier and the Ponte das Barcas.
The Almadino plan was only realized in the north fronts - with the monumental Fountain of the Square of the Ribeira - and west. To the south, the wall was finally overturned in 1821 and the spring, the medieval buildings survive to this day.
In the 1980s, archaeological interventions were carried out on the site, exposing, in the center of the square, a seventeenth-century fountain. Rebuilt in its place of origin, the fountain was crowned by a sculptural piece by José Rodrigues, commonly known as "Cubo da Ribeira".
On June 24, 2000, a statue of St. John the Baptist by the sculptor João Cutileiro was inaugurated in the niche of Fonte da Praça da Ribeira.
Praça da Ribeira is a large historic area, located in one of the oldest and typical areas of Porto, Portugal.
Nowadays Praça da Ribeira is an indispensable place to visit those who pass through the city, with many spaces for nightlife, where the young people of the city meet for long nights of fun.
