The Cousiño Goyenechea were a wealthy family, owners of the Lota (coal), Chañarcillo (silver) and Viña Cousiño - Macul mines, which still belong to the family.
In 1940 the Palace was auctioned off with all its belongings. After the first round of the auction, the Mayor of Santiago at that time, Mr. Pacheco Sty, reached an agreement with the family, which practically donated the property to the city for the sum of three million pesos in bonds, to that would serve as accommodation for the illustrious visitors who would come to the capital on the occasion of the Fourth Centennial of the City.
From that date until 1982, it was the residence of distinguished visitors, a function that was interrupted by a fire that completely destroyed the second floor, preventing it from being the accommodation of Queen Elizabeth II of England who visited our country that year.
In 1977 the Mayor of Santiago Patricio Mekis opened it as a museum and in 1981 it was declared a National Monument.
